Merseyside is well known nationally for the production of commodities such as soap and margarine at Port Sunlight and glass in St. Helens. As Liverpool’s port activities declined in the 1980s the docklands now house many associated industries, such as edible-oil refining. Other sectors that are doing well in the region include the creative and digital industries, life sciences, automotive and biotechnology. Merseyside is also home to some major firms such as BAE Systems and Heinz.
